Last year, I published my first book, When They Tell You To Be Good; a memoir with Tin House Books about my political coming of age. Among the many complicated and moving reactions that I’ve gotten, one of the most compelling is…
Aren’t you too young to write a memoir?
This question although well-intended speaks to a larger problem — a society steeped in various forms of ageism that dissuade young people from believing that they hold wisdom or have lives compelling enough to write about. Ageism is a form of discrimination that is based on age. It is important to challenge these stereotypes and to encourage young people to write about their lives.
This is why I’m I’ll be giving a talk on Medium Day about the importance of young memoirs. The talk is on Saturday, August 12 at 3:30 PM EST and is titled “The Importance of Young Memoir: ”
In the talk, I’ll discuss what a young memoir is, why young people should be encouraged to write their life stories, and what the qualities of a young memoir are. I’ll also share some examples of young memoirs that I’ve enjoyed reading.
I believe this talk will encourage more young people to write their life stories. If you’re a young writer, I encourage you to come to my talk and learn more about young memoirs.
The talk will be held on Medium Day, which is Saturday, August 12th, at 3:30 PM EST. It will be live-streamed, as long as you register here.
I hope to see you there!
