This is the week of the book launch for my first book, When They Tell You To Be Good. I’ve done two book events so far and have a few more ahead of me, as well as planning some content for MWL about how to survive the chaos of the weeks around the book launch.
In Columbus, OH, I got to chat to Hanif Abdurraqib in front of a room of my community about the craft of memoir and what drives me to express my life experiences in the way that I do. The line of people waiting for me to sign copies of my book went to the door and afterward, I celebrated the night with friends.
Just a day or two ago in New York City, I did another book launch in collaboration with PEN America, where I was in conversation with Jamal Joseph, a professor, revolutionary, and writer that’s inspired me over the years. We talked a lot about the spirit of the process behind my memoir. I even got flowers from a college friend.
A thank you from my heart to yours
