What is “Millennial Writer Life”?
MWL is a community for young writers trying to navigate the writing life. My name is Prince Shakur and I’m a 27-year-old millennial writer and New York Times recognized organizer. My debut book, WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO BE GOOD, is a memoir that charts my political coming of age as a queer, Jamaican-American, and comes out in October 2022 with Tin House Books. Over the past few years of freelancing, there’s been a lot of hurdles and a few things learned, so I’ve decided to make MWL a space for me to share those things with you.
Whether it’s freelancing, being an essayist, or becoming an author, the writing life can be hard. So having a space to go to for down-to-earth tips, tricks, and advice can be really cathartic. That’s where Millennial Writer Life comes in.
Some things you can expect to learn more about:
How to get into freelancing
The different kinds of pitches to send to editors
How to build an online writing presence that helps you get a literary agent
Interviews between me and other writers
And more, at your request.
